Is booing Brett Favre really going to happen?

This past week Packers President Mark Murphy announced that this season the Green Bay Packers would NOT be having a half time ceremony at a home game for the retiring Brett Favre's jersey.

Forget the debate about whether the Packers should retire number 4. They should. There is no compelling reason not to retire it. If there is a lynch pin to the renaissance of the Green Bay Packers of the 1990s it's not Ron Wolf, and it's not Mike Holmgren. It's Brett Favre. Case closed.

Forget the drama of Brett leaving Green Bay. Remember, Brett was forced out.

Forget the drama of Brett going through back channels to get to Minnesota. Well, ok. That was a dick move.

Still, time heals all wounds, and who can blame a proud guy for wanting to show the guys who pushed him out that they were wrong. I mean, sure I just got done saying it was a dick move, but it's a dick move you can see the reasoning behind. Let he among us who hasn't wanted to give a big fuck you to someone who rejected him cast the first boo. I think Jesus said that. While there are fans who have said they will never forgive the Minnesota treachery. I think the fact that in 2010 Green Bay kicked Minnesota's ass twice AND Brett had to wear the ugliest uniforms in the NFL for two seasons is come uppence enough.

Look, when Brett Favre's number is retired there's gonna be hardly any booing. I guarantee it. 1st off, time does heal all wounds. The hardliners faction are dwindling in numbers. The flip side of that is the group that is welcoming Brett back is growing.

Here's the reality; scalping tickets is a glorious part of Wisconsin sports. We love the Packers. We also love making a buck on our tickets in the name of sharing access to Lambeau. The waiting list is 60,000 for crying out loud. For many of us secondary markets are the only way in. So when the Packers announce at which game the retirement ceremony will be held the secondary market for those tickets will respond.  Those tickets will be through the roof baby. Through - the - roof. The pro Brett side is growing, and the Brett haters are dwindling. Are the haters gonna pony up big bucks just to get into Lambeau and lustfully boo Brett? How much are you willing to pay just to be among the minority of those who will boo Brett Favre. How bitter do you have to be to drop $500, or $1,000 to boo him?

Truthfully, I don't think we'll hear any boos. The cheers will be too loud. Those will be the fans who pony up cash to get in for the retirement. I wish it was this season.

It's silly season

Here it is, silly season. March Madness? No. Spring training? No. Taxes? Hell no. Slackers finally taking down their goddamned Christmas lights? No, none of that.

It's NFL free agency season. The silliest of all silly seasons. This is the time the NFL juggernaut is fed less by the mainstream fans, and more by the rock headed, backwards cap-wearing, full-of-shit "experts" in every city. The guys who won their fantasy league going away one season, 7 years ago, but have been "snake bit" since then, but damned if they don't know what's what. Ask them, they'll tell you. Shit, you don't even have to ask them. They'll tell you anyway.

These are the guys - and they're always guys, I've yet to meet a "full of shit" variety female fan - who will tell you why the GM of their team is an idiot. Everybody knows at least one of these doucherockets. By the way, if you don't know one, then it's you. These the are guys the NFL depends on generating the TV ratings for the goddamn scouting combine. People watch the scouting combine. There are commercials! Who watches this? If I'm watching anyone run fast on TV there better be cops in pursuit, or a gold medal at the end. Who watches TV to see people do the fucking shuttle run for no reason?

Who makes all the comments on the local media websites about how Ted Thompson is ruining the local team (be they Packers, Bears, Lions, Ravens, and on and on and on)? Who calls the radio shows? Who tweets incessantly how stupid Ted Thompson is? These guys. They are the dipshits who were apoplectic last silly season when Ted Thompson didn't sign Steven Jackson, and the year before when he dind't get a 1st rounder for Matt Flynn. Steven Jackson went on to suck ass in Atlanta. Matt Flynn couldn't keep the Buffalo Bills job. Now they're chicken little'ing all over the place about "too much money to Sam Shields," "If the don't sign a safety, Thompson should be fired" "If Thompson doesn't fire Capers/McCarthy, then he should be fired." These are the comments on Wisconsin media. Change the names, and they would be in any other NFL market.

They're in every sport in every city, and they're damned annoying, because all they do is repeat conventional sports wisdom. "Defense wins championships" "Pack needs a running game" "If you can't stop the run, ...." DERP DERP DERP. Here's the thing about conventional wisdom; it's never wise. If I wanted it, I'd turn on ESPN. These people need to shut up and go away, because they give sports fans a bad name. They're the ones throwing drinks at team buses, getting in fights, yelling at the TV in the local establishment, stealing foul balls, and being assholes when someone takes their kids to a game. Nobody cares you won your fantasy league three years running when Marshall Faulk was in his prime, and you got him early because nobody else knew how good he'd be when the Colts let him go except you. Fine genius. Now could you please sit down, and shut up, because nobody is impressed. We'd like to watch the game.

Retire the number......once Brett is in Canton

Retire the number. We know it's deserved for what was done on the field. Enough of the drama

For at least 3 years prior to Brett's first retirement there was the "will Brett retire" dance. After the 2007 season this is pretty much what happened:

Pack: Brett, c'mon man. we do this every year. It's getting old. Make up your mind for everyone
Brett: Well, right now, in March, I think I'll retire.

Press conference, I've loved Green Bay. We loved you too Brett. You're the best. No, you're the best

August rolls around

Brett: Man, I know I retired, but it's time for camp. I miss the guys, and playing. I'm not retiring.
Pack: OK, but you have to win the job.
Brett: S'cuse me? I'm Brett f'n Favre. It's my job.
Pack: Negative - you have to win it. Canton bound or not.
Brett: That's BS. Brett Favre don't carry a clipboard. I'm playing.
Pack: Not if you don't win it.
Brett: 3 MVPs, and a Superbowl ring. My job.
Pack: All 10 years old. You have to win it.
Brett: Might as well trade me, cuz' the ol gunslinger is playin'
Pack: OK, but not in the division. You're going to the Jets.

2008 rolls on. Brett's a Jet. Good start, bad finish.

Brett: My arm hurts. I'm retiring - for real this time.
Vikings: Not so fast. Think about it. We're not in a hurry. Jackson.....he's not good.
Brett: Alright I'll think about it.
Vikings: Too bad about the end in Green Bay. We feel terrible for you.
Brett: Thanks man. Chilly, you're alright, and I know Darrell from back in the day. Remember my 3 MVPs?
Vikings: Hellz yeah
Brett: Alright. I'm playing.

Brett tears it up in 2009, but Brett's away the Conference Title against the Saints.
Brett has a forgettable 2010, and A-Rod leads the Pack to SuperBowl LXV.

He want to keep playing, and prove he had it. Nothing more than that. Favre haters need to get over it all.

Brett Favre's number #4 should be retired. The same as Bart Starr's #15. Just like #15 though, #4 should wait until he's enshrined in Canton. Not out of spite, but because that's the Packer way.
